Job Description:
The Mental Health Technician provides Mental Health Day Treatment (MHDT) and Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment (CPST) services, as defined by the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) for patients enrolled in the Department of Psychiatry for mental health and addiction treatment. Assists in program development and enhancement.
The ages of patients served spans the spectrum of the life cycle, working with elementary school age children and their families as well as adults with their own mental health or addiction needs. Care will be directed at taking information from patients, answering questions from patients, visitors, etc. recognizing that every age group has unique developmental characteristics influencing the approach that should be utilized in dealing with these patients.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Two years of college experience with coursework related to psychology or similar field or holds an associate degree or certification in Mental Health Technology or related field.
• Must be certified in BLS and maintain certification throughout employment.
• Must have crisis intervention certification or receive within probationary period and maintain certification throughout employment.
• Must have First Aid certification or receive within probationary period and maintain certification throughout employment.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and must be insurable under the University of Toledo Medical Center’s driving policies. (Copy of valid driver’s license and driver’s form must be completed at time of bid/pre-employment paperwork to be eligible.)
• Ability to plan and organize work and to work under close supervision. Willingness to accept responsibility for patients and their care when performing designated functions of this position.
• Must receive training for or education in the following areas and demonstrate prior to or within ninety days, competency of basic mental health, which shall include, at a minimum the following:
1. An understanding of mental illness, psychiatric symptoms and impact on functioning and behavior.
2. How to therapeutically engage a mentally ill person.
3. Concepts of recovery/resiliency.
4. Crisis response procedures.
5. An understanding of the community mental health system.
6. De-escalation techniques and understanding how his/her behavior can impact the behavior of individuals with mental illness’.
7. Any other competencies established as appropriate based upon the mental health services and activities to be performed, characteristics and needs of the persons to be served, and skills appropriate to the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working with children preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
