Job Description:
This position exists to conduct invasive grass carp removal and to collect and process biological and physical samples needed to carry out research on grass carp. Field and Laboratory Assistants will work mostly in the field as boat crew. When needed they will also carry out laboratory procedures or enter data.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelors Degree in a field relevant to fish ecology such as any field of biology, environmental sciences, or natural resources unless currently enrolled in a similar degree program
• Skills
o Able to work as part of a team
o Able to work long hours outdoors in all weather conditions
o Prefer previous boating experience
o Prefer fish identification skills and familiarity with aquatic ecosystems
Preferred Qualifications:
Majority of the work is performed outdoors on boats on Great Lakes, tributaries and other connected waterways. Employees are required to work in all weather conditions during the field season including, sun, heat, wind, and rain. The job requires carrying 25 pound pieces of equipment by an individual and 75 pounds with help. Work requires constant physical activity such as bending and lifting while on board a boat on the water. The work environment includes noise from an outboard motor and contact with fish and fishing gear that will be wet and sometimes covered with mud. Employees will be required to drive trucks towing boats and to back trailers and boats into the water. Employees are expected to interact professionally with the public and partners from partner agencies. Work not performed in the field will be done in a garage/shop setting. Night work will be required. Overnight travel could be possible.
