Job Description:
The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film seeks to hire a Lecturer in Theatre Costume Design to begin August 2025. This is a 9-month teaching position with teaching and practical duties. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about helping students create bridges to entering the realm of professional costume work, as well as entering jobs in parallel fields of work in the creative industries. Teaching duties: Costume Technology, Stage Makeup, Costume Design, Intro to Theatre, and courses in expertise areas. Must mentor students working on independent projects in theatre technology and costume design.
Responsibilities include:
- Producing Costume Designs, Renderings & associated paperwork with a theatrical design
- Determining construction materials, shop needs and supplies.
- Overseeing construction/shop budgets as well as production budgets in the associated areas.
- Hiring, supervising and mentoring students in costume design both in the classroom and in the production shops.
- Hiring, supervising and mentoring students in costume construction both in the classroom and on department productions.
- Constructing costumes.
- Incorporating safety regulations into theatre curriculum and costume shop practices.
- Organizing and maintaining working theatre spaces.
- Maintaining and organizing costume stock and storage.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
1) MFA or MA in Theatre with professional experience in Costume Design & Costume Technology & in the Theatre and/or Entertainment fields.
or
2) a Bachelor's degree in Theatre with at least five years of professional experience in Theatre Costume Design and Technology or a similar level position in Theatre and/or Entertainment.
Working knowledge of:
- Sewing (Hand and Machine)
- Draping
- Flat Patterning
- Costume Rendering
- Fabric Distressing & Dyeing
- Basic Stage Makeup
- Basic Hair Styling
- Basic Wig Styling
- Basic Costume Craft Skills
- Ability to climb ladders
- Ability to lift 50lbs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in professional theatre
- Experience in relevant parallel industries
- Willingness to help students bridge to professional theatre and relevant parallel industries.
