Job Description:

The College of Law is searching for an Assistant Dean, Law Student Services. This position will provide leadership and strategic direction for a broad range of services and programs to enrich the overall experience of UT Law students and support student academic, professional, and personal development. The position will perform critical work in connection with the college’s ABA accreditation requirements as the lead agent for compliance with ABA Standard 508 Student Support Services. This role works closely with the Dean, Academic Dean, Office of Admissions, and Office of Professional Development, to ensure that students develop essential professional competencies for attorneys. Responsible for significant work in connection with state bar character and fitness investigations for 100 or more students per year.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Dean, Law Student Services include:

1. Advise and refer individual students where appropriate regarding academic, medical, family, and personal issues; serve as advisor for all transfer students. Work closely with the Office of Admissions and Career Services to ensure delivery of consistent and coordinated student support.
2. Serve as liaison to student organizations and advisor to the Student Bar Association; oversee and help develop the Inns of Court Program; work closely with student organizations to plan large scale events as needed.
3. Set Student Affairs policies and responsible for discipline and crisis response for students; receive, investigate, monitor, and work to resolve student grievances.
4. Resolve application amendment issues and non-academic honor code violations.
5. Supervise CWA employees within the College of Law.
6. ADA Liaison – oversee college compliance with ADA and applicable university policy.
7. Edit and transmit the weekly Student Affairs e-news to College of Law community.

This position Reports directly to the Dean of the College of Law and works with the following: Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of Admissions, Office of Professional Development, and Director of Communications. Direct reports include an Administrative Assistant I & Paralegal 1.

The Assistant Dean, Law Student Services works in a professional office environment with possible high stress levels. Some travel may be required. Occasional evening or weekend work possible. Occasional lifting necessary for event set-up.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/experience/licensing:

• J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to a state bar (active or inactive status) is required.
•Three to five (3-5) years of experience successfully managing people and projects, working with diverse constituencies, providing direction, setting priorities, identifying opportunities, and implementing major initiatives is required.

Communication and other skills:

•Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills characterized by the ability to interface with a range of constituents, including Law School students, faculty, staff, alumni, and University colleagues.
•Excellent administrative, counseling, and organizational skills.
•Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion.
•Effective use of computer and related technology for various informational and operational purposes.
•Effective oral and written communication skills.
•Project management and organizational skills.
•Detail-oriented and efficient workstyle.
•Dependability and professional demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Previous experience providing guidance and/or counseling to graduate students preferred.
•At least three (3) years of senior-level leadership experience in a complex organization is strongly preferred.
