Job Description:

The Associate Vice President for Risk Management/Chief Risk Officer, reporting to the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO, will lead the Enterprise Risk Management Advisory Committee including development of agenda, reports, and presentations. In consultation with Senior Leaders, Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and other administrative and academic leaders, the AVP/CRO will develop, maintain, and report on a response plan for risks and opportunities assigned to them to ensure effective risk management, policies, procedures and controls. The AVP/CRO is responsible for identification and selection of liability, property, and casualty insurance coverages and in consultation with the EVP/CFO setting retention and loss coverage limits. As the responsible official for the University’s Internal Controls for operational risks and Enterprise Risk Management policy, the AVP/CRO will oversee its development and approval by the Senior Leadership and ultimately the President.
Additionally, the AVP/CRO advises (i) the Board of Trustees (BOT) on updates pertaining to Internal Controls and Enterprise Risk Management Policy; (ii) develops and submits risk information for review on a regular basis to the Finance and Audit Committee of the BOT on changes in UToledo’s risk profile, risk tolerance, and risk capacity; (iii) collaborates with University personnel to assist with the University’s Emergency Response planning; (iv) staff, chair, or serve on University committees as requested; and (iv) represent the University to external parties as appropriate. (v) Understands and monitors the global commercial insurance market and alternative risk transfer methods and options including the IUC-RMIC that may be available to the University to assure the efficiency of its insurance and risk management programs.(vi) Manage the annual insurance renewal process including data gathering, presentation of data, and communication of the University's operational risk control programs to incumbent and prospective insurers whether through the IUC-RMIC or commercial insurers outside of the IUC programs including the use and/or evaluation of alternative risk transfer methods and options. Regarding the exploration and use of commercial insurance and alternative risk transfer methods and options outside of the IUC programs, evaluate and select the necessary service providers and consultants such as insurance brokers/agents, captive insurance managers, actuaries, claims services, loss prevention services, and other services as needed to protect the University effectively and efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree from an accredited university in healthcare compliance, Insurance, Business Administration or related field.
• At least seven (7) years of experience in compliance and risk management is required.
    o Ten (10) years of experience in compliance and risk management in higher education or healthcare is preferred.
• Significant leadership in a complex, matrixed organization
• Ability to anticipate and provide information along with the appropriate analyses while getting results through others.
• Experience with global insurance markets, alternative risk transfer methods and options, insurance procurement, insurance service providers, and the insurance distribution system.
• Excellent analytical and problems solving skills including ability to resolve complex issues and review and comprehend statistical data and reports.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal credibly and effectively with senior leadership.
• Experience preparing and delivering Board level presentations to various stakeholders.
• Entrepreneurial mindset to seek out and risk mitigation from new and existing opportunities.
