Job Description:

UToledo Health and the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences invite applications as a full-time or part-time nocturnist to the Department of Hospital Medicine.

UTMC is seeking a dedicated in-house Nocturnist to provide consistent overnight coverage for the General Medicine services, with an average admission volume of approximately 10 ± 2 patients per night. The Nocturnist will share new admissions with the senior night-float resident, who will admit up to six patients per night, and will share in-house Internal Medicine cross-coverage with the second night-float resident. An in-house Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) fellow will cover the MICU, evaluate and admit patients requiring ICU-level care, and respond to rapid response calls and other medical emergencies throughout the Internal Medicine services, in collaboration with the on-call Critical Care attending.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Work with the Hospital Medicine healthcare team to provide patients with medical care services within the standard of care for Hospital Medicine patients.
  • Evaluate, triage, and admit patients from the emergency department/outside facilities
  • Cross coverage: Monitor and manage cross-coverage for patients admitted under daytime hospitalists
  • Acute care management: respond to rapid responses, code blue calls, and other sudden clinical deteriorations.
  • Work closely with night-shift nurses, APPs, and emergency staff.
  • Order laboratory and radiology tests and refer patients to specialists when appropriate.
  • Analyze reports, test results, medical records and examinations to diagnose condition of patients and propose treatment options.
  • Prescribe pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented medical conditions.
  • Discuss potential side effects of medication/treatment with patients and ensure that all allergy information is up to date before prescribing medication/treatment.
  • Provide advice to patients for lifestyle and diet changes that may improve their health or help to treat the health issue they are experiencing.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures and objectives, ongoing quality improvement objectives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
  • Record complete, timely and legible medical records.
  • Participate in the teaching programs of the Department of Medicine, the College of Medicine, and the University.
  • Participate in research trials that align with the goals of the Department of Medicine.
  • Participate in service assignments of importance to the Department of Medicine, the College of Medicine, and the University.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or equivalent required
  • Successful completion of an Internal Medicine residency
  • Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine
  • Current licensure in the State of Ohio required, prior to beginning the position

Communication & Other Skills:

  • Ability to successfully teach and mentor medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Experience in collaborating with specialists to explore patient health conditions and diagnose health issues.
  • Experience in working as a team of healthcare professionals and collaborating with them to ensure positive, effective patient experiences with our organization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
