Job Description:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Institutional Compliance, the Institutional Compliance Specialist (UTMC Focus) position will support the mission of UTMC function in the following ways:

• Onboard and screen Internal students participating in an internship through UToledo/UTMC (i.e., any UToledo student participating at UTMC or the Health Science Campus in a rotation, clinical or internship).
• Onboard and screen external students participating in externship through UToledo/UTMC (i.e., any non-UToledo student participating at UTMC or the Health Science Campus in a rotation, clinical or internship)
• Onboard and screen “shadow” students at UToledo/UTMC (any “shadow” student participating at UTMC or the Health Science Campus)
• Onboard and screen volunteers serving UTMC/Health Science Campus, who are outside the scope of the UTMC Volunteer Services function (determination to be made jointly by the UTMC Volunteer Services and Compliance Offices).

In addition, the Institutional Compliance Specialist (UTMC Focus) is responsible for supporting the execution of the Compliance Program. Duties would include ensuring ethical and compliant practices are implemented and maintained across the organization in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, ordinances, commercial payers' rules and regulations internal policies and procedures, and other requirements as they relate to operations, documentation practices, and the delivery of quality care in a compliant manner.

Minimum Qualifications:


Professional Standards
• Work independently. Must be of ethical character. Must maintain strict confidentiality protocols.
• Must be objective and independent when conducting reviews.
• Adhere to the workflow design established for department and meets all job performance standards.
• Maintain a professional and constructive manner with all UToledo/UTMC/UTP employees.
• Proven ability to effectively present in front of large groups
• Demonstrate knowledge of general office practices and procedures, including but not limited to MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
• Proven ability to implement new programs independently.

Education/experience/licensing:
• Must have a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years' experience in healthcare operations.
• Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare discipline (preferred). The hiring authority will consider comparable experience as a compliance specialist/officer or placement coordinator as a possible substitute for a bachelor’s degree.

Communication and other skills:
• Must have demonstrated leadership skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work independently.
• Must have ability to escalate confidential and sensitive matters involving privacy and compliance.
• Current knowledge of healthcare, federal and state privacy regulations, and third-party regulations.
• Must have ability to monitor advancements in information technology to ensure organizations adoption and compliance.
• Strong positive verbal and written communication skills.
• Willingness to go above and beyond the service expectation of the customer.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of web management applications.
• Experience with Volgistics software applications.
