Job Description:

The Assistant Director of the LaValley Law Library oversees the public and student services functions of the College of Law’s Library, including supervision of the Evening/Weekend Reference Librarian, and the Librarian I who in turn supervises ten to fifteen student employees. Like the Assistant Dean/Associate Professor, the Assistant Director also serves as a primary legal research librarian resource for the College of Law, answering questions regarding the collection, aiding patrons in locating print and electronic resources, and referring queries to others as appropriate.

Principal Duties:

• Manages all public and student services functions for the LaValley Law Library.
• Leads Law Library strategic planning efforts
• Manages complex vendor contracts and similar Law Library administrative functions
• Actively works to increase equity and inclusion within the LaValley Law Library and, by extension, the College of Law
• Leads the Law Library’s creation of policies and procedures, and ensures they are properly adhered to and updated
• Communicates frequently with other departments in the College of Law to align Law Library objectives and operations with the overall goals of the College
• Analyzes Law Library statistics and makes library-wide decisions based on relevant data
• Coordinates the Reference Desk schedule
• Supervises, coaches, and evaluates the performance of the Senior Electronic/Media Services Librarian, the Legal Reference Librarian, and the Evening/Weekend Legal Reference Librarian
• Supervises, coaches, and mentors the Librarian I (CWA) regarding Law Library circulation and reserve functions, ensures the Librarian I is effectively supervising student employees, and directs necessary adjustments for ongoing improvement
• Manages the development of the Law Library’s collection in both online and print formats
• Manages, designs, and participates in student instruction, outreach activities, and specialized in-class research sessions
• When assigning self to reference duties, provides highly specialized legal reference advice to law students, faculty, and other University of Toledo community members
• Manages the creation and updating of print and electronic reference tools
• Chairs and serves on library and relevant law school committees
• Engages in professional development via active membership and participation in national and regional law librarian associations (i.e. AALL and ORALL)
• Acts for the Assistant Dean in the Assistant Dean’s absence

The Assistant Director position cooperates with librarians and staff at Carlson Library and Health Sciences Library to streamline efficiencies, improves access to information resources for legal education and research and improves law student and other user satisfaction with the LaValley Law Library.

The Assistant Director receives direction from the Assistant Dean for the LaValley Law Library / Associate Professor of Law. This position supervises the work of the Senior Electronic/Media Services Librarian, the Legal Reference Librarian, the Evening/Weekend Reference Librarian, the Librarian I, and, through the Librarian I, indirectly supervises the Law Library’s 10 to 15 student employees.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/experience/licensing:
• Master’s degree in library science or Juris Doctor (or accredited equivalent)
• Five to seven years of circulation and/or reference experience in an academic library
• One or more years of leadership experience supervising employees
• Evidence of significant and increased job responsibilities within an academic library
• Evidence of successfully coordinating, directing, supervising, or evaluating the work of others
• Demonstrated knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Sierra client
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite

Communication and other skills:
• Proven history of offering excellent customer service
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Evidence of ability to work well with diverse populations
• Strong interpersonal skills

Physical requirements
• Ability to lift 35 pounds
• Ability to push carts of books

Preferred Qualifications:

• Both JD and MLS degrees (one or the other is sufficient with appropriate experience)
• Applied knowledge of OhioLINK
• Applied knowledge in the use of legal research databases, specifically Lexis and Westlaw
