Job Description:

The University of Toledo invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics to start August 19, 2024. Successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses introduction through advanced, in ceramics. Candidates with traditional or interdisciplinary practices are encouraged to apply.

The position is a one-year benefited Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics position. Candidates must have taught all ceramic techniques including: hand building, wheel throwing, mold making, glaze making, 3D ceramic printing, and slip casting. They must also be familiar with firing techniques including reduction, oxidation, sawdust and raku firings. The VAP must maintain a clean, well-equipped studio and have experience with: kiln care, construction, repair and operation, kiln shelf/furniture care, and other machinery (3D clay printer, clay mixer, pug mill, spray booth, standing-kick and electric wheels), safe mineral and chemical stocking/supply, inventory, glaze chemistry and clay body formulation. Inclusive thinking, diverse viewpoints & multiple methods of content delivery is a must. Office space is provided to the faculty member.

Duties and Expectations:
• Four classes per term x 2-15-week terms.
• Perform departmental assignments, order supplies, work with the 3D Technician
• Oversee studio maintenance & equipment, maintain safe working environment, mix clay, fire kilns, stock supplies, oversee budget.
• Work with Hazardous Materials Office
• Work with janitorial staff to maintain clean/healthy studio conditions
• Attend faculty meetings and BFA candidates’ reviews.

The ceramics area stresses safety and all possibilities of the ceramic medium. The faculty member must make use of the Toledo Museum of Art’s collections for inspiration and instruction.
