Job Description:

This is a 100% external-fund-supported position with funds from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. This position will develop models to estimate or index the abundance of invasive Grass Carp in Lake Erie and other Great Lakes from disparate data streams. This position will perform statistical analysis on geospatial and ecological data. This role will recommend minor modifications to program objectives and methodology based on sound statistical reasoning. This role will regularly use software that requires prior knowledge of common data storage and analysis software, e.g., Excel, Access, and R. This position will also participate in trips on the Great Lakes and connecting waterways for the collection of invasive grass carp and other species as part of ongoing removal or specific scientific studies. When necessary, this role will assist with processing biological and other samples on boats and in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A PhD or anticipate defense of a PhD during the current academic semester in Fisheries, Quantitative Biology, Environmental or Biological Sciences, or related field is required. If PhD is pending, verification must be provided by PhD supervisor or other university administrator.
• Demonstrated experience with ecological modeling techniques appropriate for fish abundance estimation including: state-space modeling (Dynamic Linear Models), machine learning (e.g., Regression Trees), Bayesian Analysis, occupancy models, general linear models, resampling procedures, and traditional frequentist non/parametric significance testing.
• Ability to gather, organize, and manage appropriate data sets needed for modeling techniques appropriate for fish abundance estimation.
• Expertise with data storage and analysis packages such as Excel, Access, SAS, R, STAN, RTMB.
• A track record of writing and submitting manuscripts for journal publication.
• Knowledge of basic fish ecology, limnology, and Great Lakes science.
• Experience in collecting and analyzing biological and other samples from boats or other platforms. Experience in the operation and data processing from standard fisheries and limnological gear.
• Experience sampling Great Lakes, connected waterways, or large rivers.
• Experience working with or for state natural resources agencies is highly desired.
• A valid US driver’s license and ability to drive University of Toledo’s vehicles is required.
• Experience presenting and discussing results and conclusions of data collection and analysis and modeling to scientific and public audiences, i.e., track record of posters and talks at conferences and meetings.
• The person in this position must work well as a team member, sometimes under uncomfortable field conditions (e.g., cold, heat, rain).
• The ability to lift sampling gear weighing up to 80lbs with assistance from another crew member(s).
• Overnight travel may be required for collection and other trips.
