Job Description:
This strategic position serves as a principal advisor to the Dean of UT COMLS. This position supports the Dean in directing, implementing, and monitoring the strategic agenda for the COMLS, representing the Dean in facilitating the dissemination of information and communication across departments, divisions, and business units within the COMLS. It is responsible for the central coordination of all activities and for ensuring the timely flow of information to and from the Office of the Dean, working with the Offices of Medical Education and Faculty Affairs. An essential function of this position is to oversee the unified faculty recruitment process, which is a shared function of the Office of the Dean, faculty affairs and the practice plan. The position frequently interacts with senior leaders including the Associate Deans, Vice Presidents, Deans, Chairs and UT Health executives and healthcare affiliate leadership, as well a wide range of external public and private partners on a diverse range of strategic, operational, political, and organizational issues.
This role reports to the Dean and is a member of the Leadership Team collaborating with departments University-wide to identify opportunities and barriers to the University’s efforts to recruit and retain a diverse community of successful students, faculty and staff; works with University personnel to ensure effective implementation and appropriate integration; Supports and sustains a culture of service, professionalism and continuous improvement in the executive’s organizational units. Manages special projects including matters involving University officials and community leaders and is expected to exercise considerable discretion and judgement on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred, in a relevant discipline such as Public Health, Health Administration, Business Administration, or Management.
Ten (10) years of progressive experience in an advisory role, preferably in a higher education institution.
Five (5) years of management experience, including oversight for the operation of a unit.
Experience in communications, marketing, project management and business development would be desirable.
Demonstrated effectiveness in managing and inspiring staff who have varying levels of administrative experience, staff recruitment, employee development, and successful performance evaluation & management skills and experience.
Experience in higher education policy, especially regarding trends and priorities in academic medicine.
Proven and demonstrable leadership acumen, as demonstrated by strength of character, decisiveness, personal accountability, and team-building capabilities, underpinning a commitment to institutional advancement over personal accomplishment.
Excellent oral and written communication, with demonstrated competencies for interpersonal communication with high-level problem-solving skills, change management, and strategic planning.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
Skilled in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgements while working effectively, collaboratively, and tactfully with administrative colleagues and academic areas within the university.
Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
Knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures and the regulatory environment within which they operate or within a specialty area.
Ability to analyze and solve problems as well as conflict resolution capabilities.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Experience in leadership, comfort with building relationships of trust with many communities that are a part of the University, and ability to navigate political and community complexities.
Understand and appreciate academic environment and higher education and the ability to impact and change lives.
