Job Description:

The main purpose of the Post-doctoral role is to support, plan, and conduct original research while working with Prof. Anne Medling and group at the University of Toledo on activities related to black hole growth. One goal of this position is to use existing and planned high resolution observational data to test precise theoretical predictions for black hole accretion rates in nearby AGN. This position includes some freedom to pursue additional projects of the associate’s choice within the areas of black hole fueling and feedback and galaxy evolution in general. The associate will be involved in mentoring research with one or more students within the Medling group, and will have options to get involved with more teaching and/or outreach activities if they choose.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent Doctoral Degree in an appropriate discipline is required.  Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or a related field before the start date, which should be around or before Fall 2024.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills (in English) required
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a multidisciplinary research team
  • Ability to perform research activities with initiative and independence, under general direction from the Principal Investigator.
  • Sound knowledge of best practices in research for appropriate field.
  • Effective Decision-making and problem-solving skills required
  • Must be detail oriented and organized, with the ability to keep accurate records.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • The successful candidate will also have familiarity with or interest in one or more of the following areas:
    • Integral field spectroscopy
    • Near-infrared spectroscopy
    • Molecular gas observations and interferometry
    • Dynamical modeling
    • Hydrodynamical simulations
